In order to best explain the content of the book, it is easiest to discuss what the book is not. This book is not a one-size-fits-all approach to weight gain. In fact, there is not one specific, set course that you are to follow. It does not jam useless information down your throat and tell you what you “must” do, as if you are not a powerful human being who can make his own decisions. The book does not attempt to give you all the answers because any book doing that is pure rubbish. No one has all of the answers because each and every single person is different, in a different environment and situation, and responds differently to different situations. Did I mention different? 

The Skinny Guy’s Guide to Gaining Weight does not spill out confusing scientific information that leaves you wondering what you just read. It does not require you to spend countless hours reading and stressing out about getting through the content and somehow figuring out what to do with it. It is not your standard health book.

Here is what The Skinny Guy’s Guide to Gaining Weight IS! It is a 4-week, 28 day guide that empowers the reader to take control of his own personal health. Each day you are asked to read a short text, usually one to two pages. You can read more but it is strongly encouraged that you take it one day at a time.

Each day gives you a task to complete and although you certainly could do more than one reading at a time,  more than one can quickly become overwhelming and stressful, a theme that we discuss in the book is best to keep to a minimum. Creating change in your life should be exciting and fun, not an added stressor! Also, you do not want to spread yourself thin (pun intended?). When you are completing a task or activity, dive all the way in! Don’t just skim the surface and rush through the process. Respect the process, enjoy it, love it! 

The readings and activities are designed so that you are performing the leg work and the research yourself. It makes no sense for me  to harp on a low-carb diet and strength-based workout if you know that method does not work for you. The book lets you consider the tough questions and points you in the direction of the answers. You tailor your own plan because you are the one who knows what you’ve tried, failed at, had success with, and what direction you would like to go in. You do plenty of things on your own each day, why should gaining weight be any different?

Of course, I am not leaving you high and dry. The exercises make your choices crystal clear and help you understand what you should be looking for and where you should be looking for it. The book succumbs to the fact that there are plenty of resources available from respectable experts in the field, so we should certainly take advantage of that. I do, at times, give examples of strategies that you can apply without doing any research should they interest you. 

Most importantly when reading The Skinny Guy’s Guide to Gaining Weight,  you will find that you already have the answers you are looking for, it is just a matter of getting your thoughts organized and stating them clearly. It guides you and helps you not just make the right decisions, but make the right decisions for the right reasons.
